When my kids went ...I think the effort is working. When my kids went to Weber like five years ago, that school had to have been 90% White and 10% Asian with MAYBE 2% free and reduced lunch. Now, I think there is actually class conflict going on. Weber, Wickham and Lincoln are always stereotyped as the rich schools on the West Side. Weber is still above Lincoln and just behind Wickham in median income, but they have way more disparity. The wealthy neighborhoods of Galway, Walnut Ridge and the area around Weber don't mix well with the Kum&Go area and Hawkeye Court apartments.Chi-Town Cubbiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05705118927877198186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-76750098360434460462009-06-03T23:48:24.052-05:002009-06-03T23:48:24.052-05:00I respectfully disagree somewhat. Johnson County has cities that are different culturally, especially Iowa City and Coralville. The bigger you make a government, the less responsive it will be to its citizens. Would a resident of combined government in Oxford be better served by a government that would be dominated by its large neighbors?

That being said, I know well the transit problem. If Iowa City was willing to go to the table and talk about an ICART (Iowa City Area Rapid Transit), it could happen. It wont happen on Jeff Davidson's watch.John Barleykornnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-34809865826242059082009-06-03T13:56:38.486-05:002009-06-03T13:56:38.486-05:00John Barleykorn:
Couldn't agree with you more...John Barleykorn:

Couldn't agree with you more -- except as to strategy. We don't need 361 school districts and we don't need 99 counties, either. Nor do we need the multiple city councils, law enforcement organizations and public transportation systems that we have serving Iowa City and environs -- with a population about the size of a significant apartment development in a major urban center. We need much tighter integration between the community colleges and the universities. We haven't had much success over the last 100 years reforming those things.

So I prefer to start small. If there is anything in that op ed column that actually contributes to community dialogue, or impacts what the School Board and Administration do about boundaries, I'll consider the time spent writing the column to have been worthwhile.

-- NickNickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08467682953748756539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-81814415397918800182009-06-03T13:24:46.421-05:002009-06-03T13:24:46.421-05:00I think you need to look beyond that and look at s...I think you need to look beyond that and look at school district boundaries. Particularly in North Johnson County. ICCSD, CCA, and College Community should meet and draw boundaries that make sense. You have kids going to elementary school by bus a long ways in the CCA district when North Liberty has two schools less than 5 miles away. This will only get worse as more growth occurs.John Barleykornnoreply@blogger.com
