I...These tactics are not endemic to this situation. I am a Jewish landlord in Bloomington, Indiana, and have fallen prey to an anti-semitic city government, run by an ex-con mayor, Mark Kruzan. Over the past two years, Kruzan and his cohorts in the Legal Department and the Housing Department, Kevin Robling and Lisa Abbott, have systematically fined me for a multitude of ordinance violations ranging from my grass being a few inches too long to allegations of "alarming" occupancy density, such as situations in which four individuals legally occupy a 4-bedroom home.

Here are links to a few blogs about these experiences:

http://patriciamulvihill.blogspot.com
http://cityofbloomington.blogspot.comPatinkin, Sethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09235316336471802214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-88875237541368897192007-09-30T18:35:00.000-05:002007-09-30T18:35:00.000-05:00Mason's statements were to an economic development...Mason's statements were to an economic development group. What else is she going to talk about? I'm sure that's what they wanted her to talk about. If she were talking to an educational group, she would be talking about the UI's educational mission. If she were talking to an arts group, I'm sure she'd be talking about the UI as an arts powerhouse. So for you to say that this represents what Mason thinks "what we're all about" seems to me a gross mischaracterization. Sure, you can argue there's too much economic development talk going on at the UI. But that doesn't mean it's the be-all and end-all. And, besides, that's what the state legislature has told the public universities to do--more economic development.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-59847406718533512872007-09-30T11:24:00.000-05:002007-09-30T11:24:00.000-05:00I'm really not arguing the moral or ethical point ...I'm really not arguing the moral or ethical point of marketing credit cards to students one way or another here--just making an observation.

My understanding is that the UI has had this program in place for around 15 years. Thousands of students have been openly marketed by the alumni association in this way, then, for a decade and a half. Have there been any complaints by students or parents in the past 15 years? I don't recall seeing any.

Again, I'm not saying this makes it right or wrong--I'm just wondering if, if this is a "scandal" and a "scam," why haven't the "victims" made a peep for a decade and a half?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-11949849588870832942007-09-30T00:44:00.000-05:002007-09-30T00:44:00.000-05:00Wonder if any 'lunches with the team' have occurre...Wonder if any 'lunches with the team' have occurred? Considering the NCAA regulation qouted below, a 'lunch with the team' could be an NCAA violation.

"Promotional activity restrictions: NCAA rules strictly prohibit a student-athlete from promoting or endorsing a business, commercial product or service and/or receiving any type of compensation for promoting or endorsing. This restriction includes but is not limited to the use of a student-athlete's name, photograph, likeness, spoken words or appearance in any type of promotion or advertise from a business, product or service.

Student-athletes may participate in promotions for institutional, charitable, educational or nonprofit organizations but only after receiving prior written approval and verification that the promotion will meet certain criteria set forth by the NCAA. Prior written approval must be received through the Office of Athletics Compliance. Failure to receive such approve could impact the student-athlete's eligibility to participate in intercollegiate competition. "Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
