Drinking has been in the Iowa City culture for many many years. This didn't just start a few years ago folks.

In fact, Constance makes me sick. She was exactly the kind of professor who generally had disdain for undergraduates and wanted only to publish and enrich their own reputations. If she is so ashamed, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

Maybe the behavior of the faculty and the fact that alums like me who were treated like meat through a grinder are the reasons that athletics hold the position they do. We got a lot more enjoyment from that aspect of our 4-5 years than I did in any class or my interactions with any faculty. Of the 130+ hours of courses at the UI, I can name 3-4 professors that I had much personal interaction with. Several had the personalities of lamp posts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-91578608877749759642008-07-30T00:21:00.000-05:002008-07-30T00:21:00.000-05:00Why is no one commenting about the mother's allega...Why is no one commenting about the mother's allegation that the UI Athletic Dept knew of a third party to the assault? Logic would indicate that authorities have already determined this allegation to be false, since there are only two individuals charged. Please explain.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-52807768224857311992008-07-24T09:21:00.000-05:002008-07-24T09:21:00.000-05:00I find it interesting that Mason wants to bring in...I find it interesting that Mason wants to bring in an independent group to develop a sexual violence policy when a group on campus has been struggling to get enough administrative participation to do that very thing. There is a group called (I'm not sure of the exact name, but this is close), the sexual violence coalition, which has been trying to get a sexual violence policy established. I think RVAP and WRAC have been spearheading the effort. Maybe Mason just needs to listen to some of the very knowledgeable people in her own backyard.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-71626598796825221592008-07-23T09:50:00.000-05:002008-07-23T09:50:00.000-05:00The position of president as an actual CEO or COO ...The position of president as an actual CEO or COO has been gone for some time. It really started that way during Sandy Boyd's tenure and the trend has accelerated. This is not unique to the UI. Doug True and other VP's do almost all the day to day administration of the U. Sally Mason is correct in saying that a sexual assault we not normally be something she would deal with. The only reason here is the high visability of the people involved. If this was a alleged rape involving regular UI students, it would just be handled by the UI Police and County Attorney's Office.

Sally Mason is not to blame for the system.

Of course, this whole situation has given an excuse for all the football haters to come out. Its no secret that there is a segment of the UI Community that resents the resources the athletics has. Never mind that its self raised. As an alum, I can tell you I would rather give my annual $200 to the athletics scholarship fund than the fund of the department I worked through for my major. The department treated me like a piece of meat to grind through the system and had little interest in me since I wasn't one of the top students. My "advisor" didn't want to deal with me at all, and in later years I forged his signature in order to change classes. No one cared or noticed or checked.

I would rather give my $200 and enjoy the games as I get a lot more from going to the games than I did from my schooling.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-42442852235211333882008-07-22T14:47:00.000-05:002008-07-22T14:47:00.000-05:00I think it says a lot when the president of a majo...I think it says a lot when the president of a major university says that she doesn't deal with things like this. It's clear that Sally Mason is yet another passing stranger, only around to raise money.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-28800440787419638252008-07-22T11:13:00.000-05:002008-07-22T11:13:00.000-05:00I do not understand why Barta or Ferentz would eve...I do not understand why Barta or Ferentz would even want to be involved in this. It makes no sense.

I believe this is a case of too much internal policy, which at times conflicts with the Iowa Code. I can't believe the UI attorney's didn't see this before. I think people want to find someone to scapegoat here, but the answer is that it is a systemic failure.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-14015702217653401572008-07-22T09:03:00.000-05:002008-07-22T09:03:00.000-05:00Re: "Phil Jones should have been gone a long time ...Re: "Phil Jones should have been gone a long time ago. But he and pal Chuck Green and others in the UI admin all have each other's backs. There's zero accountability.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-19057892346799793212008-07-21T23:13:00.000-05:002008-07-21T23:13:00.000-05:00Nick,The regents' report said that the UI followed...Nick,

The regents' report said that the UI followed all internal procedures, but what about federal regulations? It seems that the UI did not report this within two business days, then it runs afoul of the Jeanne Clery Act, formerly known as the Campus Security Act. I'm not familiar at all with this law, but I recall Ohio State had a case involving a very similar incident several years ago. Any thoughts on this?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-42683113362187286322008-07-21T12:45:00.000-05:002008-07-21T12:45:00.000-05:00Thanks for reprinting the letter. The UI does sel...Thanks for reprinting the letter. The UI does self-police; the Division of Public Safety is a de facto police force with jurisdiction over all UI property. If you call 911 on campus, you are routed to UI police. But that is not the issue. At issue is whether the Athletic Department followed UI policy with regard to the reporting of sexual assaults, and it does not appear that happened. As far as I'm concerned, this is worse than the Pierre Pierce debacle.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-44503923611756472362008-07-20T19:54:00.000-05:002008-07-20T19:54:00.000-05:00Nick perhaps you can bring us up to speed on the c...Nick perhaps you can bring us up to speed on the conflict-of-interest aspects of this case. It appears to me that the UI was engaged in self-policing.

It seems to me that the UI is on dangerous ground if they self-police on behavior prohibited by the Iowa Criminal Code.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30130444.post-13870337937681169302008-07-20T16:55:00.000-05:002008-07-20T16:55:00.000-05:00Wow.
